Die Antitumorwirkung wird durch mehrere Mechanismen vermittelt: Hemmung der Proliferation von Tumorzellen, Induktion der Apoptose (Zelltod) und Regulierung (Anhalten) des Zellzyklus in der G2\/M-Phase. Zur Antitumorwirkung trägt auch die immunmodulierende Wirkung der Chinesischen Wolfsbeere bei. Eine klinische Studie wurde mit 79 Patienten mit einer Krebserkrankung durchgeführt. Die verabreichten LBP (Polysaccharide aus Lycium barbarum – siehe unten) zeigten eine günstige Wirkung; außerdem wird eine Verstärkung der Wirkung bestimmter Zytostatika beschrieben. Die Chinesische Wolfsbeere reduziert auch die unerwünschten Wirkungen von Chemotherapie und Strahlentherapie und kann daher als geeignete Ergänzung zur Standardbehandlung von Krebserkrankungen dienen (An evidence-based update on the pharmacological activities and possible molecular targets of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides. Das besondere Gemisch aus Polysacchariden und Proteoglykanen, dessen Bezeichnung vom lateinischen Namen der Chinesischen Wolfsbeere abgeleitet ist, ist ein außergewöhnlich starkes Antioxidans, begrenzt den Alterungsprozess des Organismus und erhöht die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber schädlichen Umweltfaktoren.
