The main active ingredient in willow bark is salicyl or salicylic acid. After being transformed in the liver, these have the same effects as acetylsalicylic acid and are also known as the main active ingredients of Aspirin®. Salicylic acid has well-known analgesic and antipyretic properties and also prevents blood clot formation. Proper application of white willow bark can eliminate the negative effects that some salicylic acid-containing preparations have on the digestive system.
