When examining its effect on human cells affected by leukemia, thymoquinone was found to activate apoptosis of tumor cells, i.e., their demise. During this process, it activates certain caspases and disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential, which is essential for energy production. In breast tumor cells in vitro, thymoquinone showed effectiveness. Its proapoptotic and anticancer activity is described in colorectal tumors. The results of other studies indicate that thymoquinone treatment for colorectal cancer is as effective as treatment with the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine in Brno). Performed studies also investigated antibacterial effects: black seed oil was found to have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. It acts, for example, against Staphylococcus albus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, or Shigella niger and Vibrio cholera. It has shown excellent antifungal activity. Black seed contains many other beneficial substances: beta-sitosterol, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, folic acid, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and phosphorus.

In the case of alpha-hederin, antitumor effects have been demonstrated, which are of interest in pharmacological research.
