Acerola (Malphighia glabra) or Brazilian cherry comes from the subtropical regions of Central and South America and the Caribbean. It is most commonly cultivated in Brazil, where it was discovered by the Italian naturalist Marcello Malpighi in the 17th century and named after him.
It is a non-climbing dense evergreen shrub or small tree. The flowers form inflorescences, from which the fruits develop into orange to red fleshy drupes, similar to cherries.
Acerola is one of the richest sources of vitamin C, containing up to 30 times more than an orange. The extract is standardized to 25% vitamin C content. In 500mg of extract (the content of one capsule) our body receives 125mg of vitamin C, which is = 156% NRV (nutrient reference value). It also contains B vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, E, minerals such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus, as well as glucose, fructose, sucrose and other irreplaceable bioflavonoids, antioxidant substances such as phenols, phenolic pigments (pelargonidin, malvidin), quercitins, kaempferol, phenolic acids - p-coumaric, ferulic, caffeic... anthocyanins and others.
