Harmonization of body and soul

Cordyceps (Chinese caterpillar fungus, Cordyceps sinensis) was one of the most valued fungi in ancient China and Tibet used for harmonizing both soul and body. This parasitic fungus is a rich source of beta-glucans, minerals, trace elements, and vitamins.

Cordyceps sinensis (Dongchonxiacao, Chinese caterpillar fungus, Caterpillar mushroom, Ophiocordyceps sinensis) belongs to the genus Cordyceps, which also includes Cordyceps militaris, Cordyceps liangshamensis, Cordyceps gunnii, and others (nearly 700 species have been discovered). It is a sac-fungus, edible parasitic mushroom. Its spores attach to the surface of insect larvae and subsequently fill the entire shell with their sclerotium, from which a mature mushroom then grows. Cordyceps grows at altitudes above approximately 3500 meters, mainly in the mountains of Tibet, in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, etc.

The mushroom is harvested from April to August. However, it is rarely found in the wild now. Apparently, its occurrence has decreased by 90% over the last 25 years, which has naturally increased its market value, leading to its artificial cultivation. The demand for Cordyceps is mainly due to its effects on human health.

The power of Cordyceps has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine. There are stories describing how yak herders observed a change in animals that grazed on Cordyceps.

The animals were more vital, stronger, healthier, and more potent. Written records can be traced back to 620 AD. Cordyceps became known to the Western world only in 1726 when it was presented at a mycological conference in Paris. At that time, however, the Western world had no idea about the effects of Cordyceps. This changed much later, partly because in 1964, Cordyceps was officially listed among herbal medicines in Chinese pharmacology.
